Courageous women focus of card issue

Apr. 9, 2004

Trading cards depicting renowned American women went into free distribution at high schools nation wide in March publicizing a college scholarship program funded by a deodorant manufacturer.

Arrid Total Women of Yesterday and Today includes contemporary government leaders such as Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor and North Carolina Sen. Elizabeth Dole among five current female social leaders.  Chicago's Hull House founder Jane Addams and the American Red Cross' first president Clara Barton represent two of the set's five historical figures.  An additional three cards will be produced honoring Arrid's 2003 scholarship winners.

This is the second year Arrid and its marketing firm Coyne have produced a Total Women issue.  According to spokesperson Deborah Kelco, the 2003 cards included Condoleeza Rice among the five Today selections.  Eleanor Roosevelt, Susan B. Anthony and 1930s aviator Amelia Earhart were selected for the Yesterday portion of the set.

"The pool of honorees is researched and then selected by the Women's Museum in conjunction with the Arrid Total brand," Kelco said.  "The Total Women of Yesterday are those who have had the greatest achievements on women's advancement in society.  Total Women of Today are recognized as modern day pioneers serving as an inspiration to strive for greater independence and success."

Three thousand sets have been manufactured with about 300 earmarked for the Women's Museum in Dallas.  Three scholarships totaling $18,000 will be awarded by Arrid through its women's advancement program.
